Why I started Island Shield

The idea for Island Shield began with my grandparents, who have lived in Galveston their entire lives and have experienced many tropical storms and hurricanes. Whenever severe weather threatened the island, they had to piece together information from television reports, phone alerts, government websites, social media and local news. They would stay glued to the television, keep their phones close and hope an evacuation warning arrived early enough for them to prepare, leave safely and avoid becoming trapped in heavy traffic.

As they have grown older, that uncertainty has become more concerning to me. Preparing for a storm takes more time when mobility is limited, medications and important belongings must be gathered, pets need to be secured and transportation has to be carefully planned. Waiting until the last possible moment is not always safe or realistic for older adults, people with disabilities, families with young children or anyone who needs additional time to evacuate.

As a developer, I realized I could create something specifically for them: one simple place where they could see the information that matters without switching between multiple news channels, websites, apps and social-media posts. I wanted them to have access to clear, current information without having to navigate complicated technology or sort through rumors, sensational headlines and fear-driven content.

That is how Island Shield was created.

Island Shield brings together available weather information, official alerts, tropical-system monitoring, causeway traffic, estimated travel times, shelter resources and other safety information in one accessible dashboard. It is designed to help people understand what is happening, what conditions may be developing and what options are available to them before a situation becomes urgent.

For my grandparents, having this information in one place has helped replace some of the uncertainty with awareness. It allows them to monitor conditions at their own pace, prepare earlier when necessary and feel more confident about the decisions ahead.

Now I want to make Island Shield available to everyone in Galveston, free of charge.

My hope is that the platform can help residents, caregivers, families, visitors and vulnerable members of the community feel more informed and less overwhelmed during severe weather. It cannot remove the danger of a storm or replace instructions from emergency officials, but it can make important public information easier to find, understand and use.

Island Shield was built from love for my family and respect for the people who call Galveston home. The long-term goal is to continue improving the platform, add more safety and accessibility features and eventually expand it to other coastal communities facing the same challenges.

During uncertain weather, people deserve more than scattered information and last-minute panic. They deserve time to prepare, confidence in what they are seeing and a clearer path toward safety.
